Prime Minister James Marape has committed K10 million to improve housing for Motu Koitabu communities in Port Moresby, recognizing the indigenous landowners’ contribution to the city’s development.
The commitment was announced on Monday by the Minister for Provincial and Local-Level Government Affairs and Kikori MP Soroi Eoe, who represented PM Marape at the launch of the Elavala water rehabilitation project by Moresby North-West MP Lohia Boe Samuel.

Mr. Marape was unable to attend because of a National Executive Council meeting.
Mr. Eoe said the K10 million would support housing improvements and form part of broader Government efforts to address basic infrastructure needs in Motu Koitabu communities.
“The Prime Minister has committed K10 million,” Mr. Eoe said.
He said improved housing, water supply and other essential services were critical to raising living standards for the people on whose traditional land Port Moresby had developed.
In a recorded message played at the event, Mr. Marape reaffirmed the Government’s support for Motu Koitabu communities and acknowledged the contribution of their traditional land to government and urban development over many years.
Mr. Eoe said the Government recognised that Motu Koitabu communities had not received adequate benefits from development on their customary land.
The housing commitment comes as the Government, NCD administration and Motu Koitabu leaders push for improved basic infrastructure across indigenous communities.

Mr. Eoe said the national and city governments must work closely with Motu Koitabu leaders to deliver better infrastructure and living conditions, particularly as Port Moresby prepares for increased visitors and major international events.
He said the Government would continue supporting infrastructure projects aimed at improving living standards for Motu Koitabu communities and the wider city.
