Prime Minister James Marape says the appointment of a permanent Electoral Commissioner is nearing completion.
This statement comes after concerns were raised over the expiry of the acting commissioner’s term weeks ago.
Speaking during Parliament Question Time on Thursday (20th May), Mr. Marape assured Parliament that the appointment process was progressing and that Acting Electoral Commissioner Ms. Margaret Vagi would continue in the role following an extension of her acting term.
The issue resurfaced in Parliament after East Sepik Governor Allan Bird questioned the Prime Minister on when a substantive appointment would be finalized ahead of preparations for the 2027 National Election.
Responding to the questions, Mr. Marape said he had already instructed the Chief Secretary to expedite the process.
“The process is almost nearing completion,” Mr. Marape told Parliament.
He clarified that the Electoral Commissioner is not appointed solely by the Prime Minister, but through a bipartisan appointment committee comprising the Prime Minister, Opposition Leader, Chief Justice, Public Service Commission Chairman and the Chief Ombudsman Commissioner.
Mr. Marape said the position had already been advertised and applicants shortlisted, with the committee expected to meet soon to select the best candidate.
“It is in the interest of all of us to have certainty and leadership over this important constitutional office as preparations for the 2027 election continue,” he said.
