Ok Tedi boss reaffirms safety as Tabubil landfill fire contained

Ok Tedi Mining Limited (OTML) is continuing to monitor a largely contained tyre-waste fire at Tabubil Landfill in Western Province after it was detected early on Sunday with police investigating suspected deliberate ignition.

The incident was promptly identified and responded to by Ok Tedi’s Emergency Response Team and Incident Management Team, which immediately implemented containment measures to minimize potential impacts and protect employees, contractors and the wider Tabubil community.

The fire is now largely under control and remains under continuous monitoring by Ok Tedi personnel. No injuries have been reported.

Preliminary assessments indicate the fire may have been deliberately lit.

The matter has been referred to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, and Ok Tedi is cooperating fully with authorities as investigations continue.

Ok Tedi Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kedi Ilimbit in a statement on Wednesday said the safety of employees, contractors and community members remained the company’s highest priority.

“Our immediate focus has been the safety of our people and community, and the safe containment of the fire.

“I would like to acknowledge the swift and professional response of our Emergency Response and Incident Management teams, whose efforts helped bring the situation under control.

“While investigations into the cause of the incident continue, Ok Tedi is working closely with the relevant authorities and will maintain ongoing monitoring of the site to manage any potential risks.

“We also urge employees, contractors, business partners and community members to rely on verified information from official Ok Tedi communication channels and refrain from sharing unverified or misleading information.”

“The circulation of inaccurate information can create unnecessary concern and uncertainty.

“We will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.”

The CEO has also urged community members to remain vigilant during the current dry conditions, which increase the risk of fire-related incidents.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is encouraged to report it to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary, he said.
