Prime Minister, James Marape has requested foreign consular assistance to support the possible evacuation of Papua New Guinean citizens currently in the United Arab Emirates, following the escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
PM Marape today made the statement in response to the deteriorating regional security situation arising from the recent conflict between Iran and Israel, which intensified over the weekend of February 28, 2026.

Prime Minister Marape said that, in the absence of a Papua New Guinea diplomatic mission in the UAE, the Government will formally seek assistance from both the UAE and the Australian governments to ensure PNG citizens and diaspora communities are included in contingency and evacuation arrangements, should the situation worsen.
He said he will write directly to Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to seek support for the welfare of PNG nationals in the UAE.
Additionally, the Government will engage the Australian Government through the Resident Australian Embassy in Abu Dhabi to facilitate possible evacuation support.
The Prime Minister expressed deep concern for the safety and wellbeing of PNG citizens in the UAE and neighboring countries, adding that the Government’s thoughts and prayers remain with them.
He also expressed hope that all parties involved will pursue dialogue and reach an amicable truce to restore regional and global peace and security in the Middle East and beyond.
