Prime Minister, James Marape has commended the graduation of 284 new police recruits at the Bomana National Centre of Excellence last Thursday.
PM Marape described the milestone as a critical step in strengthening the country’s law and order sector and securing the nation’s future.

Speaking yesterday as Guest of Honour and Reviewing Officer at the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) National Centre of Excellence in Bomana, the Prime Minister congratulated the new officers—comprising 243 men and 41 women—for choosing a life of service and sacrifice.
“You have chosen to join a worthy cause—the security and safety of your country. Today, you become part of an institution that defends our Constitution and preserves the unity of our nation,” Prime Minister Marape said.
Prime Minister Marape emphasized that the passing-out parade comes at a significant moment in the country’s history, as Papua New Guinea celebrates its 50th anniversary of Independence and reflects on nation-building priorities.
“Right after our 50th anniversary, you are stepping into a noble responsibility. You are sons and daughters of this country who have chosen, of your own free will, to serve and protect Papua New Guinea,” he said.
PM Marape reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to increasing police manpower to 10,000 personnel as part of a broader strategy to address law and order challenges nationwide.
“It is in our national interest to build this force to 10,000 personnel at the earliest possible time to serve our growing population of over 10 million people,” he stated.
He said the Marape-Rosso Government will continue to invest in recruitment, training, and institutional capacity through sustained budget support and strategic reforms.
“Law and order remain a top priority for my government. We will continue to invest in training, resources, and welfare to ensure our police force is equipped to serve our people effectively,” the Prime Minister added.
Addressing the graduating recruits, Prime Minister Marape issued a strong call for professionalism, discipline, and national loyalty.
“Be loyal not to tribe, not to personal affiliations, but first and foremost to your flag, your Constitution, your uniform, and your country,” he urged.
He encouraged the officers to uphold the highest standards of integrity and to place national interest above personal gain.
“This country needs men and women who are not in love with self, but in love with their country—who are willing to put their lives on the line to defend our collective future,” he said.
Prime Minister Marape also announced the Government’s intention to review and improve the welfare of police personnel, including salaries, insurance, and working conditions.
“Police salaries will be relooked at. Insurance, safety, and protection for officers—including those injured in the line of duty—will also be reviewed to ensure your country protects you as you protect our country,” he stated.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the leadership of Police Commissioner David Manning, training officers, and international partners, including Australia, for their continued support in strengthening the RPNGC.
He concluded by urging the new officers to view their careers as a lifelong commitment to nation-building.
“This is not just a parade—it must become your lifestyle. Walk out with your heads held high, knowing you carry the responsibility of securing our nation,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“As you serve today, I want you to look ahead to 2075 (PNG’s 100th Independence Anniversary) and be proud that you helped secure Papua New Guinea for future generations.”
