PNG PM Marape pays tribute to late Fiji Statesman Ratu Epeli Nailatikau

PNG Prime Minister, James Marape has conveyed the deepest condolences of the Government and people of Papua New Guinea to the Government and people of the Republic of Fiji following the passing of former President and Speaker of Parliament, His Excellency Ratu Epeli Nailatikau.

In a statement, Prime Minister Marape described the late Ratu Epeli as a towering Pacific leader whose life was defined by humility, service, and an unwavering commitment to his people and the wider region.

“The Pacific has lost a great statesman, and Papua New Guinea has lost a true brother,” Prime Minister Marape said.

“He was not only a respected leader of Fiji, but also a Wantok to us — a man whose life embodied the shared values of our Pacific family.”

The Prime Minister said Ratu Epeli’s distinguished career, spanning military service, diplomacy, and national leadership, stood as a powerful example of dedication and integrity.

“He carried himself with quiet dignity and strength, earning respect not through position alone, but through humility, wisdom, and genuine care for people,” he said.

“He was equally at home among world leaders and ordinary citizens, never losing the common touch that made him truly a People’s President.”

Prime Minister Marape highlighted Ratu Epeli’s contributions to regional causes, particularly his advocacy in raising awareness and addressing stigma surrounding HIV/AIDS, which had a lasting impact across the Pacific, including Papua New Guinea.

“He stood for the vulnerable and championed dignity for all Pacific people. His work helped save lives and uplift communities across our region,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape said the passing of Ratu Epeli would be deeply felt throughout the Pacific, noting the strong bonds of friendship between Papua New Guinea and Fiji.

“In our Melanesian tradition, when a great tree falls, the whole forest feels the tremor. Today, Papua New Guinea stands in mourning with Fiji,” he said.

To the late leader’s wife, Adi Koila Nailatikau, and family, Prime Minister Marape extended heartfelt sympathy.

“Your loss is our loss. We share in your grief and stand with you in this time of sorrow,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape said while Ratu Epeli has passed on, the legacy of leadership, humility, and regional unity he leaves behind will continue to inspire future generations.

“The bridge of friendship he strengthened between our nations will endure, and his legacy will continue to guide our region,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape concluded by offering prayers for the late statesman.

“We thank Almighty God for his life and service. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
