PNG Power Ltd has commenced a major upgrade of the transmission line supplying electricity from the Baiune Substation to Zenag Farm in Morobe, aimed at improving reliability and preparing the network for future demand.
PNG Power Limited management said the transmission line currently serves as a one-way power feed for more than 1,000 customers across the Mumeng and Buang Local Level Government (LLG) areas.

“This upgrade is essential to improve reliability, reduce outages, and ensure the network is ready to meet future electricity demand,” the management stated in a statement today.
The Management said the project will involve replacing ageing conductors with high capacity “Cherry” conductors, realigning power poles, and relocating sections of the line.
“We are also upgrading insulators, earthing systems, and safety equipment, while preparing the network for a future voltage increase from 22kV to 33kV,” the management said.
“All works will be carried out in line with national and international engineering standards to ensure safety and quality,” the statement added.
The upgrade is scheduled to run from March 23 to July 27, 2026, with temporary power shutdowns expected during work hours in affected areas.
“Power will be switched off at certain times to ensure the safety of both our workers and the public during the upgrade works,” management explained.
Communities expected to be impacted include Baiune Bridge, Samsam, Sambio Villages, Banglum, Yangen Village, Kamox, Dust Market (Kumalu), Pamalabus, Zenag Station, Zenag Farm, Mumeng Primary School, Zepa Primary School, Wesamo, Patep Munanum, Parakrtis to Patep Stone, and all Buang LLG villages from Zamo to Wagau.
Upon completion, management said customers will benefit from improved services.
“Customers can expect a safer and more reliable electricity supply, reduced blackouts, fewer maintenance disruptions, and improved capacity to support future community and economic growth,” the management said.
“These improvements will strengthen the single-feed network from Baiune Substation and reduce long-term maintenance challenges,” the statement added.
PNG Power Limited acknowledged the inconvenience caused during the upgrade period.
