Swift Police response prevents deadly sorcery violence in Enga

Police in Enga swiftly have responded to sorcery accusation-related violence to prevent further escalation following the death of a young man at Suyan Camp Gate in Porgera.

Enga Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Chief Superintendent Steven Harris, said the man died after consuming alcohol continuously for two days.

However, the community at Suyan Camp Gate accused an elderly woman of practicing sorcery and causing his death, which led to violence.

PPC Harris said police officers fortunately arrived within minutes and took immediate action to contain the situation, preventing further escalation and ensuring public safety.

Police alleged that members of the community at Suyan Camp Gate in Porgera accused an elderly woman of practicing sorcery following the young man’s death, which led to violence.

Police also alleged that during the incident, a few women were named, placing their lives at immediate risk.

Police, supported by the PNG Defence Force and Mobile Squad 11 members, responded quickly and rescued a second woman from imminent harm.

She was taken into protective custody and is now safe.

“Police have established strong leads, and Criminal Investigation Division officers are actively identifying those responsible while investigations continue.

“Police reiterate that their role is to protect lives and keep people safe, particularly those who are vulnerable.

“Sorcery accusation-related violence is a horrendous act that targets the most vulnerable in our communities. It is firmly rejected by elders and leaders across Enga, and police stand with them,” PPC Harris said in a statement.

PPC Harris said no allegation or belief justifies violence, and such actions constitute serious criminal offences that will be dealt with under the law.

He urged the community to remain calm and not take matters into their own hands.

He added that if anyone is at risk, or aware of someone who may be targeted, they should contact police immediately so action can be taken to ensure safety.
