Papua New Guinea’s Electoral Commissioner appointment remains uncertain as the country moves closer to the 2027 General Election with Acting Electoral Commissioner Margaret Vagi’s term has expired.
According to a local news report, Vagi’s acting appointment expired this week, less than 12 months before writs for GE27 are expected to be issued.

Prime Minister James Marape had previously confirmed Vagi’s appointment in November last year and directed Chief Secretary Ivan Pomaleu to ensure proper procedures were followed in filling the position.
The Electoral Advisory Committee (ECAC) is now expected to urgently meet to review whether Vagi’s acting appointment should be extended while the recruitment process continues.
The Electoral Commissioner’s position has already been advertised, with the government stressing the importance of appointing a qualified and suitable candidate to oversee preparations and conduct of the 2027 National General Election.
Vagi replaced former Electoral Commissioner Simon Sinai after his retirement at age 60.
