The Waikele Youth Rugby Team has received a timely boost with the presentation of new playing jerseys during a ceremony at Gerehu’s Waikele Field in Port Moresby, held in conjunction with the nation’s Remembrance Day of late Sir Michael Somare.
The presentation was made last week by Peter Paleapa, country representative of the Rotary Club of Brisbane.
The club supports community initiatives including churches, schools, hospitals and youth programs across the region.
Also in attendance was Gerehu youth leader Lawrence Kumbon, who coordinates Rotary Club activities locally under Mr. Paleapa’s leadership.
Mr. Kumbon thanked the club for its continued support, saying the donation reflects a growing commitment to steering young people toward discipline, unity and positive leadership.
Speakers at the event encouraged the young players-drawn from Gerehu Stages 5 to 8-to honor the spirit of Remembrance Day by upholding values of respect, teamwork and service, both on and off the field.
Organizers said the jersey presentation marks the beginning of sustained engagement with the Waikele Youth Rugby Team and the wider Gerehu community.
The Rotary Club of Brisbane continues to back initiatives across Papua New Guinea, reinforcing its focus on community empowerment and youth development.
