A young man from Jiwaka Province, Samuel Vue, has made history at the University of Goroka after completing his Master’s degree in record time.
Mr. Vue finished his Master of Education thesis in just 10 months—far quicker than the usual two or more years most students take to complete the program.
He began his studies in February 2025 and started research by May, focusing on a key issue in Papua New Guinea’s education system: the challenges affecting the implementation of the Standard-Based Curriculum (SBC) in junior high schools.
His research covered six schools across Jiwaka Province.
By October 2025, Vue had completed his first draft and submitted it to his supervisor, Dr. Agewa Zeming, for review.
He finalized and submitted the thesis for examination in December the same year.
His hard work paid off when he successfully completed the program within one year and graduated with a distinction during the university’s 29th graduation ceremony on April 14, 2026.
Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Vue credited his success to faith, determination, and sacrifice.
He spoke about the long nights, financial struggles, and time away from work and family—but said it was all worth it in the end.
He encouraged young people to stay focused, work smart, and believe in perseverance.
Raised by a single mother, Vue said his upbringing played a major role in shaping his resilience and commitment.
His research has also contributed to a growing understanding of the challenges schools face in implementing the SBC.
He previously studied similar issues during his honors program in 2023, with copies of his work now available at the university’s library and postgraduate studies lab.
Mr. Vue expressed his gratitude to his supervisor, Dr. Zeming, for his guidance, as well as to the postgraduate staff, participating schools in Jiwaka, his family, and sponsors who supported him throughout his studies.
