More than 100 students and staff from the Papua New Guinea University of Technology joined government and community organizations in a Cleanathon across Lae City last Friday, promoting environmental responsibility and community ownership.
The voluntary clean-up was organized by the Unitech Students Representative Senate (SRS) under the leadership of President Newton Yangharry, with support from the Lae City Authority and the Ahi Hope Foundation.
Participants cleaned public areas across the city to encourage residents to take greater pride in keeping Lae clean while promoting a healthier environment.
Mr. Yangharry told PNG SUN the initiative demonstrated the importance of civic responsibility and environmental stewardship.
“The Cleanathon is more than just cleaning our city. It is a message of responsibility, positive attitude and community ownership. As students and future leaders, we must lead by example and inspire every resident of Lae to take pride in keeping our city clean,” he said.
He thanked the Lae City Authority, led by Deputy Prime Minister and Lae MP John Rosso, for donating Cleanathon shirts that encouraged participants.
The Ahi Hope Foundation also supported the event by providing cleaning equipment, cartons of drinking water and doughnuts for volunteers.
Mr. Yangharry also acknowledged the assistance of Lae City Authority officers Charlie and Isaac for coordinating and supporting the Cleanathon.
He said the Students Representative Senate remained committed to working with government agencies, community organizations and development partners to promote environmental awareness and encourage volunteerism.
“The Cleanathon reflects the university’s spirit of volunteerism and demonstrates that collective action can create a cleaner, safer and more attractive Lae City for everyone,” he said.
The event ended with participants calling on Lae residents to support efforts to keep the city clean under the message: “Keep Lae City Clean – Our City, Our Hope.”
