National Information and Communications Technology Authority (NICTA) has cleared the way for 5G mobile services, making spectrum available to qualified mobile operators.
NICTA Board Chairman Brian Bridges said the regulator was ready to issue 5G licenses, marking a major step in the country’s digital development.

“I’m very pleased to announce today that NICTA is ready to issue licenses for 5G mobile services in Papua New Guinea,” Mr. Bridges said.
The available spectrum covers the 2.6 gigahertz and 3.5 gigahertz bands, supporting both 4G and 5G services.
NICTA CEO Lume Polume said the licensing framework followed years of legal, technical and regulatory work, including spectrum planning, market assessments and industry consultations.
The rollout is expected to deliver faster speeds, lower latency, greater network capacity and improved connectivity while supporting digital government services, education, healthcare, e-commerce and business.
Operators will also face rollout requirements to extend coverage beyond major urban centres and underserved communities.
Meanwhile, Starlink has already entered the market with its ultra-fast and reliable satellite internet services.
