Buin solar power generates revenue: ABG Chief Secretary announced

The Autonomous Bougainville Government (ABG) has announced a major achievement in the energy sector, NBC Bougainville News has reported.

Chief Secretary and BPWCL Board Chair, Mr. Kearnneth Nanei said the Bougainville Power and Water Corporation Limited (BPWCL) is now generating its own revenue after the commissioning of the 1-megawatt Buin Solar Power Plant.

He did not indicate how much it is generating.

He said BPWCL is one of the first State-Owned Enterprises under the ABG to earn revenue from its operations.

Mr. Nanei continued this shows Bougainville’s growing ability to run public utilities on a commercial basis.

“The solar power plant was commissioned on 16 December 2025. It now provides clean and reliable electricity to about 250 households, businesses, schools, health centers and government offices in Buin and nearby areas.”

“BPWCL has fully taken over, power supply and billing from the former operator, Buin Power, after a smooth transition.”

The project was funded by the Government of Japan and built by the United Nations Development Programme. It uses solar panels, battery storage and backup systems to ensure continuous power supply.

“BPWCL plans to connect more customers in Buin, train local technicians and expand renewable mini-grid projects across Bougainville.

The ABG has praised BPWCL for reaching this important operational and financial milestone,” he said.
