Governor Parkop commits K260, 000 as Marianville marks 60 years of Excellence

National Capital District Governor Powes Parkop has praised Marianville Secondary School’s contribution to girls’ education in Papua New Guinea.

He committed K260,000 towards the school’s development during celebrations marking its 60th Diamond Jubilee Anniversary in Port Moresby on Saturday.

Joining Catholic Church leaders, school staff, parents, alumni and students at the anniversary celebrations, Governor Parkop described Marianville as an institution that has shaped generations of young women through discipline, respect, compassion and faith since its establishment in 1966.

Governor Parkop also announced K200,000 for the construction of a security boundary fence and an additional K60,000 for school development, reaffirming his support for the school as it prepares for the future.

He noted that Marianville Secondary School has consistently ranked among the top schools in Papua New Guinea at both Grade 10 and Grade 12 levels, attributing its success to the dedication of teachers, commitment of students, and support of parents and guardians.

Governor Parkop acknowledged the school’s many alumni who have gone on to become nurses, teachers, lawyers, judges, engineers, entrepreneurs, public servants and community leaders, saying Marianville’s influence extends well beyond the classroom.

He said educating girls strengthens families and communities, ultimately contributing to national development.

Reflecting on Marianville’s founding during Papua New Guinea’s pre-independence years, Governor Parkop commended the Catholic Church and the Sisters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart for establishing an exclusive girls’ high school at a time when educational opportunities for young women were limited.

Looking ahead, he challenged the school to take a leading role in digital literacy, STEM education for girls, mental health and wellbeing, and leadership development.

Governor Parkop also called for stronger strategic planning, implementation and monitoring to help achieve the country’s Vision 2050 goals and commitments under the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

He expressed gratitude to the Sisters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, the Catholic Church, founding missionaries, principals, teachers, staff, parents and alumni for their contributions over the past six decades.

Governor Parkop described Marianville as a beacon for young women and a proud contributor to Papua New Guinea’s future.
