PM Marape commends Sir Bob Bates at launch of his book ‘Wings Over Wild’

Prime Minister, James Marape today paid tribute to aviation pioneer and tourism icon, Sir Bob Bates, describing him as a “living legend” whose contribution to Papua New Guinea will continue to inspire generations through the newly launched book ‘Wings Over Wild.’

Speaking at Rondon Ridge Lodge in Mt Hagen during the official launch yesterday, Prime Minister Marape said Sir Bob’s legacy will live on through the book, which captures a lifetime of service, adventure, and commitment to the people and environment of Papua New Guinea.

PM Marape in a statement praised Sir Bob for choosing to make Papua New Guinea his home, particularly at a time when many expatriates departed following Independence in 1975.

He said Sir Bob belongs to a special generation of individuals who came to Papua New Guinea and made lasting contributions, not for personal gain but out of genuine commitment to the country and its people.

“In the time you have lived publicly and worked in this country, you have never let this country down,” the Prime Minister said.

“We, on behalf of the children of Papua New Guinea, say thank you.”

Prime Minister Marape highlighted Sir Bob’s long-standing work in aviation and eco-tourism, particularly his efforts in developing Ambua Lodge and other tourism initiatives that have showcased Papua New Guinea’s natural beauty and cultural richness to the world.

He noted that Sir Bob’s approach to business reflects values of ethics, honesty, patience, and hard work rather than profit-driven motives.

“You don’t operate like a business. You operate more like a charity,” Prime Minister Marape said.

The Prime Minister also commended Sir Bob for his respect and trust in local communities, describing his relationship with landowners and rural people as an example of leadership built on integrity and genuine partnership.

He encouraged Papua New Guineans, especially young people, to take inspiration from Sir Bob’s life and pursue sustainable business opportunities based on land, culture, eco-tourism, and the environment.

“Our people have land. We should go into things similar to what you have done,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape said Papua New Guinea holds some of the world’s richest biodiversity and cultural diversity and stressed that the future of the country lies in responsibly developing its natural and cultural wealth while uplifting communities.

He also used the occasion to caution against the growing “fast money” mindset, saying meaningful success is built through discipline, commitment, and long-term effort.

“It must be a lifestyle — patience, hard work, and commitment,” he said.

Prime Minister Marape concluded by describing Sir Bob Bates as a true national inspiration and praised the book as a lasting gift to the nation.

“Some people call themselves legends. But you are a living legend,” he said.

“This book will speak forever. It will speak to the children of Papua New Guinea and to the next generations to come.”

The Prime Minister officially launched Wings Over Wild by cutting the ribbon and receiving the first copy of the book, marking the publication as an important historical record of Sir Bob Bates’ extraordinary journey and lifelong contribution to Papua New Guinea.
