Prime Minister James Marape has offered the National Government’s support and prayers as the search continues for 12 people, including East New Britain Provincial Health Authority employees and their family members, who remain missing at sea.
Mr. Marape in a statement said the Government stood ready to assist the East New Britain Provincial Government, disaster authorities, police and other agencies involved in the ongoing search and rescue operation.
“Our hearts and thoughts are with those who remain missing, their families, loved ones and the people of East New Britain during this very difficult time,” the Prime Minister said.
“On behalf of the National Government and all Papua New Guineans, I offer our prayers for the safe recovery of those still unaccounted for. We also pray that God will strengthen the families as they endure this painful period of uncertainty.”
Mr. Marape said he had directed relevant national agencies to remain on standby to provide any assistance required during the operation.
“The National Government will work closely with the provincial authorities to ensure every possible effort is made in the search for the missing persons,” he said.
The Prime Minister also commended police officers, disaster officials, volunteers, local boat operators, air crews and community members who have joined the search under difficult conditions.
“We are grateful to everyone who continues to search under very challenging conditions. Your commitment gives hope to the affected families and reflects the compassion and resilience of our people,” he said.
Mr. Marape called on Papua New Guineans to keep the missing people, their families and all search and rescue personnel in their prayers as efforts continue.
