Prime Minister, James Marape has announced a significant strengthening of the Government’s coalition, welcoming the People’s Progress Party (PPP) into the Pangu-led coalition as Papua New Guinea enters its 50th year of independence.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday attended by PPP leader Hon. Douglas Tomuriesa and New Ireland Governor Hon. Byron Chan, Prime Minister Marape said the move reflects both historical continuity and a deliberate strategy to stabilize and strengthen governance ahead of the 2027 National General Elections.

“We welcome wholeheartedly the rejoining of PPP into the Pangu-led coalition,” Prime Minister Marape said.
“This is not just politics—it is history coming full circle. Two of the founding parties of our nation are once again working together as we reset and recalibrate our country’s future.”
The Prime Minister highlighted the deep historical ties between Pangu Pati and PPP, noting their joint role in shaping Papua New Guinea’s path to independence.
“In 1972 and again after the 1977 elections, Pangu and PPP worked together to guide our country through its formative years,” he said.
“As we mark 50 years of independence, it is fitting that these two foundational parties reunite to help shape the next chapter of our nation.”
Prime Minister Marape said PPP’s legacy in building Papua New Guinea’s economic and governance frameworks remains significant to this day.
“Many of the strong structures in our economy and government today carry the imprint of PPP’s contribution,” he added.
PPP, led by Hon. Tomuriesa, formally confirmed its decision to join Government following consultations within its executive and parliamentary caucus.
Mr Tomuriesa said the party’s decision was guided by a desire to support national reforms and strengthen governance.
“We believe in the leadership currently guiding the country and want to be part of the reforms being undertaken,” he said.
“We will contribute constructively to ensure these reforms are realized for the benefit of our people.”
The Prime Minister noted that while PPP currently holds a small number of seats, its influence and historical standing add significant weight to the coalition.
“The strength of a party is not just in numbers, but in its legacy, leadership, and contribution to nation-building,” he said.
Prime Minister Marape also announced that the newly elected Member for Dei, Hon. Desmond Kipa, has formally expressed his intention to join the Pangu Party.
Mr. Kipa, who was elected as an independent candidate, said his decision followed extensive consultation with his constituents and was driven by the need to deliver tangible development outcomes for his district.
“My people expect service delivery—roads, health facilities, and basic government services,” Mr. Kipa said.
“Joining the ruling party gives me the opportunity to deliver within the limited time available.”
The Prime Minister emphasized that Mr. Kipa’s decision was made independently.
“We did not influence his election or his decision,” he said.
“He has come of his own free will, and we welcome him into our ranks.”
Prime Minister Marape said the expanded coalition reflects a forward-looking approach to governance as the country prepares for the 2027 elections.
“This is a deliberate alignment of like-minded leaders and parties,” he said.
“As we move towards 2027, we are building a stable and cohesive coalition that can continue to provide leadership for our country.”
He added that coalition arrangements would remain flexible beyond the elections, depending on the outcome and constitutional processes.
“Whoever receives the mandate to form government will continue to work within coalition frameworks that prioritizes national stability and development,” he said.
Prime Minister Marape concluded by reaffirming his government’s commitment to unity, reform, and responsible leadership during Papua New Guinea’s milestone 50th anniversary year.
“As we reflect on our journey over the past 50 years, we must also prepare for the next 50,” he said.
