The PNG Chiefs have secured a major signing ahead of their 2028 NRL entry, confirming South Sydney Rabbitohs winger Alex Johnston as their second inaugural player.
General Manager for Football Michael Chammas made the announcement today, describing Johnston as one of the greatest players in rugby league history.

Johnston recently cemented his legacy after becoming the NRL all-time leading try-scorer.
Chammas says the signing is a proud moment for Papua New Guinea.
“This is a significant step for our country. Young boys and girls across PNG will now see one of their own return home to wear the Chiefs jersey in our first season,” he said.
Johnston remains contracted with South Sydney for another year but was granted early permission to negotiate with the PNG franchise.
Chammas acknowledged the Rabbitohs for their support, thanking CEO Blake Solley and the club for allowing discussions to take place.
“They understand the importance of Alex to our future and what he means to Papua New Guineans,” Chammas added.
The signing is part of ongoing preparations as the club builds a strong squad ahead of its historic entry into the NRL competition in 2028.
More player announcements are expected in the coming months.
