PNG Hunters captain backs PNGRFL gender equality strategy launch

PNG Hunters captain Ila Alu yesterday commended the Australian Government’s PNG Rugby League Pathway Development Program and the PNG Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) for the launch of PNGRFL Gender Equality Strategy in Port Moresby.

Mr. Alu said that with the PNG Chiefs joining the NRL competition in 2028, the PNGRFL Gender Equality Strategy is another opportunity for women in the space of gender equality in the country.

Speaking at the launch of the PNGRFL Gender Equality Strategy, Mr. Alu said, “For me, the biggest victory was instilling confidence in young ladies to pursue their dreams.”

Alu grew up in Tokarara, a suburb in Port Moresby known for its high levels of violence and negativity. Despite this, he devoted his time to training and mentoring young women and boys.

“It’s filled with negativity and lots of violence,” he said. “And so, to go out there and impact a young life, it takes its challenges.”

Alu’s efforts have helped change the perception of women’s rugby league in PNG. With his mentor, Olympian Nelson Stone, he created a space where young ladies could feel free to express themselves.

“He encouraged and empowered women, helping them build self-confidence despite facing numerous challenges,” captain Alu said.

The initiative has been successful, with young girls now bringing their younger siblings to training sessions.

Captain Alu said, “The biggest victory wasn’t the wins on the training field. It might not be rugby; it might be through education, through training, or anything else.

“But to have that self-confidence in themselves, despite the negativities they face, they can still be able to come out there and pick up something for themselves.”
