Students inspired to know their rights and stand against violence

Students and teachers at La Salle Secondary School in Port Moresby strengthened their understanding of legal rights and protections during a discussion on family and gender-based violence recently.

With women and girls making up half the audience, the session encouraged young people to help build safer communities and stand up for women’s rights.

Supported by the Australia–PNG Law and Justice Partnership, the event brought senior magistrates from the Papua New Guinea Judicial Women’s Association (PNG JWA) into the classroom.

They explained to the students how courts respond to violence, where support can be found, and why legal awareness matters for families and communities.

Held the day after International Women’s Day, the event reflected this year’s call for rights, justice and action for all women and girls, while highlighting the role young people can play in shaping a safer future.

Speaking at the event, Magistrate Rosie Johnson, President of the PNG JWA, said that “children who come into contact with the law deserve understanding, fairness, and a chance to rebuild their lives.”

“Through these awareness sessions, we are helping families and communities learn how the courts handle juvenile cases and what support is available”

“When people understand the process, they are better equipped to protect their children and uphold the rule of law.”

Magistrate Sandy Tiankin and Magistrate Tracy Ganaii also joined the session, encouraging students to speak up, seek help and support justice for women and girls.

Australia is proud to support practical community education that helps young people understand their rights and strengthens confidence in justice systems.

Supporting women leaders in law to engage directly with students is an important part of advancing equality, safety and opportunity in PNG.

Australia will continue working with the PNG law and justice sector to support stronger institutions, informed communities and greater opportunities for women and girls across the country.
