13% increase in fees for UPNG in 2026 academic year

Parents and guardians will have to dig deeper into their pockets, following a 13 percent increase in fees at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) for the 2026 academic year.

UPNG students will face higher compulsory, tuition and accommodation fees, with most programs recording an increase of K470, bringing compulsory fees to K3,585.

According to the UPNG website: “Acting Registrar Roboam Kakap confirmed yesterday that the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) has raised its basic accommodation fees by K470 from K3,115 to K3,585 and increased tuition fees by 13 percent for all undergraduate and honors students at the Waigani and Taurama campuses.”

He also announced that the university will not accept any cash payment for compulsory fees into the Tuition Fee Account, except for board and lodging fees and for students studying through distance mode of delivery.

The compulsory fees for Waigani and Taurama campuses are as follows:

■WAIGANI CAMPUS: A K470 increase from K3,115 to K3,585.

■TAURAMA campus (health sciences): A K470 increase from K3,115 to K3,585.

■TAURAMA campus (bachelor of oral health/Bachelor of Dental Surgery, diploma in dental technology, Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery, diploma in anesthetic science): K567 increase from K3,768 to K4,335.

■TAURAMA campus (nursing): A K539 increase from K3,606 to K4,145.

The compulsory fee and accommodation fees for Papua New Guinean undergraduate and honors students at Waigani and Taurama campuses have increased by around 13 percent, except for single and single/double with ensuite rooms at the Taurama campus (nursing), which remains at K11,247 with an increase of about 3.5 percent.

Acting Registrar Kakap advised students to pay their compulsory fees online using Bank South Pacific (BSP) Pay, which opened on January 19.

Accommodation fees for the Waigani campus are:

●BASIC Twin Share: A K1,288 increase from K8,562 to K9,850.

●SINGLE Room: A K1,485 increase from K9,885 to K11,370.

●SINGLE/DOUBLE with Ensuite: A K1,963 increase from K11,072 to K12,735.

Accommodation fees for the Taurama campus (health sciences) are:

●BASIC Twin Share: A K1,335 increase from K8,890 to K10,225.

●SINGLE Room: A K1,560 increase from K10,446 to K12,015.

●SINGLE/DOUBLE with Ensuite: A K1,755 increase from K11,665 to K13,420.

Accommodation fees for the Taurama campus (bachelor of oral health/Bachelor of Dental Surgery, diploma in dental technology, Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery, diploma in anesthetic science) are:

●BASIC twin share: A K1,503 increase from K10,247 to K11,750.

●SINGLE room: A K1,748 increase from K11,632 to K13,380.

●SINGLE/DOUBLE with ensuite: A K1,929 increase from K12,861 to K14,790.

■Games Village: A K1,800 increase from K12,000 to K13,800.

The Acting Registrar said that the fee increases are intended to support the maintenance and improvement of university services and facilities.
