Air Niugini has reached a historic milestone, with four of its Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineers becoming the first Papua New Guineans to receive Airbus A220 type ratings from CASA PNG.
This achievement highlights the airline’s commitment to safety, technical excellence, and building national capability in aviation.

Engineers John Pidik, Henry Kaunger, Abraham Gena, and Edward Polau successfully completed intensive international training and rigorous competency-based assessments, equipping them to support the airline’s growing A220 fleet.
Chief Executive Officer Alan Milne described the certification as a proud moment for both Air Niugini and Papua New Guinea, saying it proves local talent can meet and exceed global aviation standards.
The milestone strengthens the country’s technical independence, reduces reliance on external expertise, and reinforces confidence in Papua New Guinea’s aviation future.
