Seventh-Day Adventist Church responds to Cyclone Maila through coordinated relief efforts

The Seventh-day Adventist Church in Papua New Guinea, through the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), in partnership with the New Britain New Ireland Mission (NBNI), has delivered immediate humanitarian assistance to communities affected by Cyclone Maila in East New Britain Province.

The PNG Union Mission said in a statement that this coordinated response was carried out in close collaboration with provincial disaster authorities, including the East New Britain Provincial Disaster Team, national disaster officials, and the Papua New Guinea Defense Force (PNGDF), ensuring that relief efforts were aligned with on-the-ground needs and government coordination frameworks.

Following rapid needs assessments conducted prior to deployment, relief supplies were distributed to affected communities, including Karavia Village (Zones 2 and 3), where over 80 households were impacted.

Assistance provided included essential food items such as rice, noodles, and tinned fish, as well as household items including cooking utensils, buckets, and clothing.

Additional support was extended to inland communities in the Baining region, where severe impacts were reported and urgent humanitarian needs identified. Relief teams responded promptly despite logistical and access challenges.

ADRA said: “ADRA remains committed to serving communities in times of crisis, as it is currently in ENB and Milne Bay, through coordinated, needs-based humanitarian response.”

“Our partnership with local missions, government agencies, and community leaders encourages support through prayer and giving to ensure that food and WASH assistance reach those most affected efficiently and with dignity.”

PNG Union Mission President Pastor Danny Philip said: “The Church stands in solidarity with the people of East New Britain during this difficult time.”

“Through ADRA and our mission network, we are demonstrating Christ’s love in action by working hand in hand with government and community partners to bring relief, hope, and support to affected families.”

Looking ahead, further relief operations are planned for Malaguna #3 and Watam Island as assessments continue to guide the next phase of response.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church and ADRA PNG are calling on members, partners, and the wider community to support ongoing relief efforts through prayer, resource mobilization, and coordinated assistance as recovery continues.
