ENSISI NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH TO DETER PETTY CRIMES

A group of young volunteers has extended the neighborhood watch initiative to their Ensisi community.

This program has helped reduce violence, harassment, car thefts, hold-ups and bag snatching at Tokarara Suburb in Port Moresby.

The watch program is aimed at providing surveillance along the Waigani road intersection so petty crimes and street harassment on women and girls are prevented.

The idea was first conceived following unofficial reports of youths based at other suburbs inflicting the crimes on Ensisi residents.

Responding to safety and security concerns, the neighborhood watch initiative actioned at Ensisi was approved by the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Waigani Police Station.

Speaking to PNG SUN, one of the volunteers said: “This area has seen numerous hold-ups and other illegal activities. However, the culprits are not from Ensisi but from areas like Morata, Gerehu, Tokarara, and other parts of Port Moresby. Most of our boys from here are well mannered and peace-loving.”

He further urged communities across the city to take similar action to safeguard lives, properties and their neighborhoods.

“Let’s all be responsible for the communities we belong to,” he added.
